You see, when I started out with videos, there was no real STRATEGY – I just knew I needed to make them.

Initially it was to help out with conversions – which they did amazingly well. Here’s one of the first ones I made for the company I created in 2003, Topskips.com:

That single video alone has had over £100,000 of equivalent traffic in Google Adwords (in fact, it’s had many £10,000s more of traffic because it has been used on so many sites and channels beyond that single YouTube channel).

Originally, this was used on our website just to explain what our skips actually looked like next to a normal (OK, overweight, but average height bloke ie. Me).

I came to call videos like these “Explainer Videos”, but then I realised that YouTube was the second biggest search engine in the world (beaten only by their owner, Google), so I decided to OPTIMISE these videos for my target keywords.

I got ranked all over the place!

Not only were these videos helping me explain my products better, they were now also getting me targeted FREE traffic.

In fact I have obtained over £1m of free traffic from the videos made for my company PAL Hire which cost me no more than £5k in total. That’s a bargain in anyone’s language.

I call these optimised videos “Land Grab Videos” because that’s what they do – grab land on the internet and, when you have a small business, that’s what you need to do – grab as much keyword-land as possible, which is why I also learned that the next most important thing you need to do is SYNDICATE your videos.

What does syndicate mean? Simply uploading to as many channels as possible because, although YouTube is by far the biggest, it’s not the only player in town AND Google loves to list optimised videos on all sorts of channels in it’s listings.

Here are the questions I get asked all the time about videos:

  1. How long should the videos be?
    This really depends on what the video needs to achieve. I have 40+min instructional videos online that work great for building up trust in my brand, but for Land-Grab videos, no more than 2 minutes is usual. It’s all about grabbing their attention with professional relevant content.
  2. What are the key features to include in a video?
    For Land Grab videos it’s about using keywords, then trust-building content with integrity which reflects the truth of your brand and/or business.
  3. How often should you put new videos on and archive others?
    If you’re using keyword-optimised videos, you should never archive them whilst they can still be working for you. You should be putting up new videos whenever you discover new converting (GOLD) keywords.
  4. Should there be a voiceover?
    Absolutely! Google can “hear” what you’re saying. Not very well, but you can improve what it hears by creating edited transcriptions. Spoken words will often if not always help your videos rank better.
  5. How to use videos to assist website SEO?
    Videos help hugely with SEO. Not only do they help you get more traffic from all the search engines, they also help your web pages rank higher and get higher CTRs (Click through Rates) which also helps the rankings for your entire website as CTR is a major ranking factor.
  6. Why does it work? Why should I use them?

  7. How effective are videos in converting b2b sales?
    There is no question that b2b sales require high quality professional videos to appeal. We have never produced one that does not have the ability to improve conversions – it’s only a problem when you try to cut corners too much by making substandard videos at home and copying other peoples’ work.
  8. Does any product/service work with video?
    We’ve yet to see a product or service that would not work with video. Have you ever seen a product that doesn’t work in real life, on TV or in pictures?
  9. Can we change URL of our YouTube videos even if they’ve already been uploaded?
    The URL will not change, but the page title is super-important and should always have your keywords in.
  10. Is it worth doing lots of short videos on each product we sell?
    Of course – every product you sell should have it’s own video.
  11. How often should you do a new video?
    Whenever you find a new converting keyword, or whenever customer feedback tells you there are better ways you could be showing/describing something.
  12. What kind of camera do you need?
    You can make great videos on your smart phone, or any digital camera. The question is, can you write, produce, edit truly professional videos, then optimise and syndicate them all in a couple of weeks?
  13. How do I make a video fun enough for others to share it?
    That’s a million dollar question. Making viral videos for your business is a whole other ball game and financially very risky. Land Grab videos are all about getting keyword traffic, which is as bankable as it gets.
